SPONSORSHIP CRITERIA

“Canada is a top destination for British working holidaymakers, offering the International Experience Canada programme (IEC) for individuals aged 18 to 35. This programme allows you to live, work, and travel in the country for a maximum of two years. After your application is approved, you will typically enter a candidate pool, and from there, it’s a random selection process for successful applications.

What is the International Experience Class (IEC)?

The IEC is part of Canada’s bilateral youth mobility agreements with 30 countries, including the UK. It is designed to help young adults gain both personal and professional experience in Canada. A significant benefit is the opportunity to gain valuable skilled work experience, which can be beneficial if you later decide to apply for permanent residence.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the IEC, you must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Have completed a minimum of 1,560 hours of work (equivalent to 30 hours per week for 12 months) in the last three years, either full or part-time.
  • Possess at least $2,500 CAD in savings upon arrival to sustain you during your stay.
  • Have a return ticket or the means to show you can afford one.
  • Provide evidence of health insurance.

Application Process

Once in the candidate pool, successful applications are selected through random draws held throughout the year. This means that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee selection, but it positions you well within the process.

If you’re under 35 and eager for an adventure in Canada, this programme could be the perfect opportunity to explore a new country while enhancing your career prospects.”

Canada’s Express Entry system offers three primary pathways for skilled individuals seeking permanent residence: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Each program targets different skill sets and backgrounds, ensuring that Canada benefits from diverse talent.

Tailored Pathways for UK Nationals

For UK nationals, entering Canada as a Permanent Resident typically involves navigating the Express Entry system. This system rewards applicants who possess the skills, experience, and education that align with Canada’s needs. Simply qualifying for Express Entry isn’t enough; applicants often require a job offer or Canadian work experience to boost their scores for selection.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

This program is ideal for skilled workers with foreign work experience who wish to immigrate permanently to Canada. Key criteria include:

  • Work Experience: At least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent part-time paid work experience in a skilled occupation.
  • Education: A Canadian secondary or post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, or an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a recognized organization to verify foreign credentials.
  • Language Proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency in English or French through approved language tests with results meeting the minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7.
  • Selection Factors: A six-factor point-based system that assesses age, education, work experience, valid job offer, language skills, and adaptability. Applicants must score at least 67 out of 100 points.

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Tailored for skilled tradespersons, this program facilitates entry for those who possess qualifications in specific trades. Important prerequisites are:

  • Skilled Work Experience: At least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the five years before applying.
  • Language Requirements: Achieving a minimum CLB 5 in speaking and listening, and CLB 4 in reading and writing.
  • Job Offer/Certification: A valid job offer for full-time employment in Canada for at least one year, or a Canadian certificate of qualification in the trade.

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Designed for individuals with recent Canadian work experience, this program supports the transition to permanent residence for those adjusting well in Canada. Criteria include:

  • Work Experience: At least one year of skilled, professional, or technical work experience in Canada within the three years before applying.
  • Language Proficiency: Language test results meeting minimum thresholds of CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A jobs, or CLB 5 for NOC B jobs.

Recent Updates and Strategic Steps

2023 Update: The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced a new pathway within Express Entry, allowing candidates to be selected based on occupation. This could be a significant opportunity for UK nationals.

To determine your eligibility and understand these opportunities, it’s crucial to conduct an Immigration Assessment and possibly consult with an expert. Booking a 1-hour online consultation can help assess your profile against the current selection score.

Additional Considerations for All Programs

Regardless of the specific program, Express Entry candidates are assessed based on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which scores candidates on:

  • Age
  • Level of Education
  • Official Language Proficiency
  • Canadian Work Experience
  • Foreign Work Experience and Transferable Skills

Applicants with high CRS scores have increased chances of receiving invitations to apply for permanent residence during periodic draws from the pool. Recent trends show that candidates with job offers or provincial nominations benefit significantly, highlighting the competitive nature of these programs. Conduct thorough research on the Government of Canada’s official website to understand each program’s intricacies and strategize accordingly.

By staying informed and strategically navigating these pathways, UK nationals can enhance their prospects of successfully immigrating to Canada through the Express Entry system.

If you intend to work while in Canada, you will need to apply for a work permit. Having a Canadian work permit enables you to work in the country for a specific duration. A work permit can be valid for up to 4 years.

Canadian work permits come in two main types: Open Work Permit and the Employer-Specific Work Permit. With an Open Work Permit, you have the flexibility to work for any Canadian employer, whereas an Employer-Specific Work Permit restricts you to working for a particular employer.

In order to qualify for a work permit, you must possess a legitimate job offer from a Canadian employer and obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) number from your employer. It is important to have a clean criminal record, demonstrate financial stability, and show intention to return to the UK after your permit expires. Learn more about Canadian work permits

What are the Requirements for Studying in Canada as a UK National?

If you’re a UK national planning to study in Canada, there are key requirements you’ll need to fulfill to ensure a smooth transition and successful academic journey.

1. Study Permit Application

Before you pack your bags, securing a study permit is essential. Most international students, including those from the UK, need to apply for this permit prior to arriving in Canada. This document is your official authorization to pursue education at a Canadian institution.

2. Financial Stability

A crucial aspect of your application is demonstrating financial stability. You must provide evidence that you can cover your tuition fees alongside daily living expenses, such as accommodation, food, and transportation. If any family members will join you, you should also account for their expenses.

3. Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Before applying for a study permit, ensure you have an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution in Canada. This is a prerequisite for your permit application and validates your intent to study.

4. Good Conduct and Security Clearance

Canada emphasizes safety and security. Hence, you may need to provide a police clearance certificate or similar documentation to prove your good conduct and that you pose no security risk.

By adhering to these requirements, your path to studying in Canada can be significantly clearer and more manageable. Always consult the official Canadian immigration website for the most accurate and updated information.

Financial Requirements for a Canadian Study Permit

If you’re planning to study in Canada as a UK student, understanding the financial requirements is crucial for obtaining your study permit. Here’s what you need to know:

Tuition and Living Expenses

To begin with, you must demonstrate that you can cover tuition fees for your chosen institution. This involves showing proof of sufficient funds to pay your educational expenses without hardship. But that’s not all—you’re also expected to have financial stability to take care of everyday living costs, such as accommodation, groceries, and local travel.

Accompanying Family Members

If any family members plan to accompany you, you’ll need to show that you can support them financially as well. This means accounting for additional living expenses, which can add up quickly. Keep this in mind when calculating your financial resources.

Proof of Funds

You’ll be required to present evidence of your financial capacity when you apply for your study permit. Such evidence could include:

  • Bank statements from the past few months
  • A letter from your educational institution confirming any scholarships or aid
  • Documentation of any existing paid positions or income sources

Meeting Additional Requirements

While proving financial stability is essential, it’s also imperative to comply with other administrative requirements. Although unrelated to finances, make sure all your paperwork is in order, as this contributes to a smoother application process.

By ensuring you meet these financial and administrative requirements, you position yourself for a successful study permit application, paving the way for your academic journey in Canada.

CANADA PERMANENT RESIDENCE AND CITIZENSHIP PATHWAY

Canadian Permanent Residence

In addition to the different temporary visa options, the Canadian government offers several routes for those looking to immigrate to Canada from UK and obtain permanent residency in Canada.

Securing permanent residence allows you to reside, work, and pursue education in Canada without time constraints. If you are considering relocating to Canada from the UK on a permanent basis, there are various permanent residency options that you may qualify for.

The Express Entry system is responsible for managing permanent residency applications under various economic immigration programmes.

Family Sponsorship – Intended for individuals with eligible family members in Canada.

Business Immigration – This provides residency for individuals looking to operate a business in Canada

If you qualify for permanent residence (invitation required under the Express Entry route), you can apply by filling out the online form, submitting necessary documents, and paying the fee.

The primary applicant and any dependents should not have criminal or medical issues that would prevent them from entering Canada

Those who have established Canada as their permanent home may decide to pursue Canadian citizenship. A pathway to citizenship is essential for long-term planning, offering security and peace of mind. As a Canadian citizen, you have numerous advantages such as voting in elections, increased job prospects, the ability to travel with a Canadian passport, and security in maintaining your residency status.

For UK nationals to qualify for Canadian citizenship, they must:

  • Have permanent resident status.
  • Reside in Canada for a minimum of 3 out of the last 5 years.
  • Pass a citizenship test.
  • Show proficiency in English or French.
  • File taxes in Canada for at least 3 years, if applicable.

Individuals younger than 18 or older than 54 are not required to take the Canadian citizenship test or fulfill language requirements, but they must still meet all other citizenship criteria.

Becoming a Canadian citizen not only solidifies your connection to this diverse and welcoming nation but also provides you with the freedom to travel the world, knowing you hold a Canadian passport.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot programme. For skilled foreign workers and international graduates interested in working and living in one of Canada’s four Atlantic Provinces: Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, or New Brunswick.

For individuals who have received a nomination from a Canadian province or territory, there is the option to apply under the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot programme. This opportunity is ideal for skilled workers looking to work and reside in a smaller community. The Rural and Northern Immigration pilot programme is community-driven and aims to extend the advantages of economic immigration to smaller communities.

Canada Family Sponsorship program is available for eligible relatives of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Inadmissibility

Canada inadmissibility can arise when a immigration officer decides key issues exist which impact your visa application.

LIVING IN CANADA

For UK citizens seeking to move to Canada, the government prioritises skilled workers through its economic immigration programs, but there are other options available. Visitors can stay in Canada for up to 6 months without a visa, and those with Canadian citizen family members may be eligible for a Super Visa allowing extended stays of up to 5 years.

For retirees, considering financial planning is essential, especially since UK state pension payments won’t increase with inflation in Canada. Thus, ensuring your financial strategy accounts for this is crucial before making the move.

If you’re interested in permanent residency, you may receive an invitation to apply through the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program. Alternatively, moving to Canada before retirement, working and establishing residency, or starting or buying a business in Canada, are options for a permanent solution.

To simplify the transition, it is often advantageous to move before retiring. This allows you to work and gain residency status, making the shift in official status smoother. Exploring business opportunities in Canada can also serve as a gateway to permanent residency, providing both an investment and a means to integrate into the community.

Considering these pathways ensures that your move can be both smooth and sustainable, tailored to your individual circumstances and future plans.

Canada has a universal healthcare system accessible to certain types of people including permanent residents, Canadian citizens, some foreign workers on work permits and some international students. If you are eligible then you can apply for public health insurance that will cover most healthcare services.

Not all temporary visa holders are eligible for public insurance and some temporary visa holders, such as those in Canada under the International Experience Canada Program are required to have private health insurance that covers them for their entire stay.

You can apply for a temporary international driving permit or exchange your UK licence – each province issues its own driving licence, so you should contact your provincial government.

If you’re asked for a letter authenticating, certifying or validating your UK driver’s licence, you should contact your UK issuing office (eg the DVLA)

stability, and show intention to return to the UK after your permit expires. Learn more about Canadian work permits

The cost of moving to Canada from the UK varies depending on the immigration route that you are applying for and several other factors so it can be difficult to estimate exactly how much money you will need. However, the costs that you should consider include:

➤ The application fee for your immigration application, including processing fees
➤ The permanent residence fee (if you are applying for permanent residency)
➤ The settlement funds you may be required to prove that you have
➤ The cost of transportation to Canada
➤ Your cost of living
➤ The cost of medical insurance if you are required to have it
➤ The cost of hiring a legal representative to assist you with your application

If you plan to bring a dependent child or partner with you to Canada then you should also consider the costs associated with this including the additional application fees.

When relocating from the UK to Canada, the expenses can differ based on the visa category or stream you qualify for. For a working holiday visa (International Experience Canada programme) or a standard work permit, the fee is $172 CAD per person, plus $100 CAD for an open work permit, which is required for Working Holiday permits but not Young Professional and International Co-op (internship) permits.

When arriving through one of the skilled worker programmes, the main applicant’s fee is $1,365 CAD, with an additional $1,365 CAD if your spouse/partner is joining you. Each dependent child incurs a fee of $230 CAD.

When a Canadian family member sponsors you, the cost is $1,080 CAD for each adult applicant and $155 CAD for every dependent child. These fees do not cover the $515 CAD Right of Permanent Residence fee (RPFR), which is required upon approval of a permanent residence application, and there are also specific savings requirements (referred to as ‘settlement funds’) for when you arrive in Canada. If you do not secure a job before you arrive, you will need a significantly larger amount of settlement funds.

Understanding Tax and Pension Implications When Relocating to Canada

Relocating to Canada brings with it numerous financial considerations, particularly concerning taxes and pensions. For those originally from the UK, it’s possible that your tax obligations won’t vanish after the move. You may still be required to pay UK taxes, depending on your residency status and other factors.

Transfer and Fees for Pensions

Retirees must also navigate the complexities of transferring their pensions to Canada. It’s crucial to explore methods to transfer your pension funds while minimizing associated fees. Opting for international banking services or seeking advice from financial institutions with expertise in cross-border transactions can help reduce these costs.

Exchange Rate Volatility

Being aware of exchange rate fluctuations is another critical aspect. Currency values can significantly impact the amount you receive either from your pension or any other international income. Tools that monitor exchange rates can help manage this volatility.

Inheritance and Other Considerations

In addition to taxes and pensions, consider how your inheritance plans might be affected by your move. Different jurisdictions have varied rules concerning inheritances, so it’s wise to seek legal advice to ensure your estate is handled according to your wishes.

Navigating financial considerations when moving to a new country can be daunting, but thorough planning and professional guidance can ease the transition and help protect your assets.
